Americans have been living beyond their means. And this cannot be blamed on
Bush but on the American civilian population itself which has become to a
large extent, decadent, lazy, irresponsible, greedy and far too reliant on
government. Well, the chickens have come home to roost in NY state and
California. The latter
state, which has a GDP slightly higher than Canada's has a deficit for this
fiscal year of $12 billion. How would the Canadian media and the public be
reacting if
the conservative federal government of P.M. Stephen Harper, which is
fighting an expensive war in Afghanistan, had a deficit like California's?
BTW California does have a very moderate GOP governor but he is just a
figurehead as California has what is known as a "weak governor" system. The
real power is held by the Assembly which is dominated by radical Democrats
and has been for decades. Economist Arthur Laffer, the original proponent of
Reagonomics in the 1980s, appearing on Fox News, stated that he has moved to
Kansas to escape California's taxes. This would suggest that thousands of
rich individuals and successful corporations have, or will, be acting
similarly.
NY state, which has a heavily Democrat and corrupt state government is in
dire straits just like California with a current fiscal deficit of $11
billion. For quite some time most of upstate NY has been an economic basket
case, made that way to a large degree by onerous taxation. NYC had been
thriving up until the recent financial collapse and now real estate values
are falling through the floor as taxes are again going up. I am not sure
what this decaying city's deficit is but it must be
staggering.
However all the news is not bad. Help is on the way. America has a now a
black Democrat president/elect, Barack Obama. With his inspiring speeches
offering hope and change, he will soon make all things right again, helped
by a Congress, overwhelmingly Democrat, with such stellar leaders and
luminaries as Nancy Pelosi, Barney (the faggot) Frank, Charley Rangel, Harry
Reid etc.
